First and foremost Dr. Payne is the best. Dr. Payne was referred to me from someone in the medical field and I am so appreciative of her referral. From my first consultation to all my post op office visits I never felt more comfortable and appreciated as a patient. From my initial visit, Dr. Payne was attentive to all my questions, he took the time to explain the procedure and what to expect prior and post surgery. Post surgery visits were always attentive and I never felt "rushed" for him to see the next patient. He shared any and all information that I requested. His staff from the scheduler to his assitants were professional and responsive and so very nice. Six weeks post surgery I am pain free and walking unassited. I cannot express my gratitude for Dr. Payne for everything and giving me back a part of my life I have been missing for numerous years....pain free walking. Thank you Dr Payne.

Full knee replacement; I was nervous (even though I have had three previous knee surgeries). It went great! Dr. Payne was fantastic. He explained the pre and post op procedures, he listened to my questions and concerns, he clearly cared. The team at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital was the most professional and caring team I have been treated by. I was worried about post op pain; however the team (and Dr. Payne) made sure I experienced little to no pain. It's major surgery, and I am glad I had Dr. Payne.

I had a full knee replacement. It was a great experience. Dr. Payne thoroughly prepared me for the surgery and post operation therapy. My outcome was fantastic! Dr. Payne is easy to talk to, he listens to your questions/concerns, and he cares. The surgical staff at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital are the best. Everyone was so kind and caring. I was worried about (as you might expect) post op pain; however, the care team and Dr. Payne made sure my post op pain was minimal. Six weeks post op and I am walking with a normal gate. I highly recommend Dr. Payne and the surgical team at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital!

Dr. Payne performed a total knee replacement surgery on my left knee in September 2019. I believe Dr. Payne is a master at joint replacement surgeries. Since my recovery I have been pain free and have a surprising range of motion in the joint. An X-Ray of the knee looked like a text book picture of a successful knee replacement outcome. I would like to thank Dr. Payne and the entire Atlantic Orthopedic staff on getting me back in good health after two successful surgeries on my shoulder and hip. I first met Dr. Payne in 2010 when he operated on my rotator cuff which turned out to be successful, then years later I started to have hip problems in 2019 and made the decision to have hip surgery in July 2020. The surgery and recovery time was excellent. His staff were very proficient in taking care of all my medical information that I needed for my transition of being from work to home for over a period of time. I highly recommend Dr. Payne for any major or minor orthopedic needs.

After years of pain I finally had my knee replaced and I couldn't be happier. Once the decision was made, Dr. Payne & his staff submitted my insurance paperwork, scheduled my surgery, & all my pre-op & post-op appointments. They truly made this an easy process for me. I am no longer in daily pain and can do everyday things that I was no longer able to do. I cannot begin to tell you how kind and helpful Dr. Payne and the ENTIRE staff including the Physical Therapy Department are at Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists. I’m older and have experienced knee pain for the past several years. Dr. Payne looked over my xrays, gave me an injection for the pain and suggested an MRI. After having the MRI I decided to wait to have any procedures done at this time. That said, without a doubt, I will be selecting Dr. Payne to do the surgery. He was very personable and knowledgeable and explained things in terms I could understand.

Dr. Payne gave me a complete hip on March 18th. I was out of the hospital within a short period of time and released by him on April 30th of this year. The in home therapy was short but effective. I believe that the efforts of Dr. Payne, his staff, along with the doctors, nurses and assistance of Sentara Princess Anne Hospital was a life saving effort. I was on the verge of being imoble when Dr. Payne found the problem and corrected it. I would reccommend Dr, Payne for any surgery required on hip or knee. Dr. Payne is a phenomenal doctor. After years of pain in my left knee, I knew it was a matter of time for a knee replacement. I was trying to avoid the inevitable but Dr. Payne addressed all my concerns, walked me through the procedure and reassured me that I am making the right decision for my health. The surgery went smoothly and recovery so far has been fairly quick. With help from physical therapy (at home and on site), today I am able to walk without a walker with little to no assistance and it's only been 6 weeks since the surgery! A big thank you to Dr. Payne and the Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists Family!

I have visited Dr. Payne many times and found him to be very professional. He has helped me deal with my knee problems with great success. On top of all that, he has a great sense of humor which helps pick you up at a time you might be feeling down. I was so impressed with the professional and prompt service at the front desk that carried on into the actual treatment room that I really wish I had gone sooner. I don't think most people like to go to any Doctor unnecessary and may put it off as I did. I highly recommend if you have an issue, do not wait. I was given a complete interpretation of my x-rays and MRI and the options available to me. That is all anyone can ask for and everyone should expect.

I decided to go to Dr. Payne for a total knee replacement after the stellar job he did on my wife's knee replacement. There is absolutely no one that I mention Dr. Payne to-from medical professionals to patients- who do not universally state that he is the foremost doctor in the region at his specialties. I cannot be happier. I followed all his pre-surgery regimens and was well on my way to complete recovery.

I went to Dr Payne , knowing I needed both hips replaced. He explained the x-ray, examined me by moving my legs so many degrees. Talking as the scribe typed everything. He asked what I wanted to do, I replied I have no choice and scheduled the surgeries 6 weeks apart. He does his job, and is a perfectionist. I don't need a Dr with bedside manners. I need a Dr that gets the job done. I put my faith in him, and he has changed my life.

Dr. Payne did a hip replacement for my husband and the results were excellent. Needless to say, five months later he performed the same surgery for me. Of course, I would recommend his services to everyone.

Dr.Payne was responsible for caring for me after a bicycling injury.I was in traction,and if I had not had his experttise and care then,I would not be walking and enjoying life now.He told me that I might have some arthritis after about 5 yrs.,but I have never had any problems,and I am sure it had to do with the excellent care that he gave to me.Thanks Doc,because I was a pilot in WWII,and was in 4 airplane crashes,but without Dr.Payne's care,I would not be upright and enjoying life now!

I am shocked at some of the reviews. Dr. Payne first operated on my husband to repair a severe rotator cuff tear. He was very diligent in following Dr. Payne's instructions for recovery. It has been 7 years. He has full use his shoulder/arm; and, says it is stronger than at any time in his life. Subsequently, Dr. Payne repaired my left hip after a fall fracture. Last year he did a total replacement of my right hip. Both surgeries were totally successful and I have no pain or limitations. We have both always felt Dr. Payne to be very attentive, compassionate and knowledgeable. I need shoulder surgery in the near future. I wouldn't even consider another doctor.

Reading many of these comments it seems like a long wait is one of the biggest complaints. Dr. Payne has no control over how many patients they schedule for him. And if he does get behind it is because he spends extra time with patients, not because he is in and out like some of the other reviews. He was operated on me twice and I could not be happier. I was told I would never have full use of my shoulder again, but I now have probably 99.9% of my previous range of motion. I know some of the surgical staff at the hospital and they all say that he can be a bit short with them in interactions (although I have never had that), but that if they were going to be operated on that they would want him to do it.

I do not understand prior years opinions, but perhaps the Dr. improved on his bedside manner or whatever; but Dr.Payne was fine with me. He listened, took his time and together we made decisions regarding my care. I have gone back to him for more consultation and will certainly go again.

I attended my late afternoon appointment with my defenses up due to the seemingly bad reviews I read about Dr. Payne on this sight. I arrived 5 minutes late to my scheduled appointment, was told (PRIOR to the request for my $50 co-payment, surprisingly) that Dr. Payne was, indeed, running one hour behind with his patients. However, my wait was not too long before I was taken back for pre-examination and x-rays. Considerately, after x-rays were taken and prior to Dr. Payne's examination, I was kept informed (twice to be exact) by his nurse when I should expect Dr. Payne to come to my exam room. Upon Dr. Payne's arrival, he physically examined me, reviewed my ER report which his office solely obtained, and asked me numerous questions with regard to my shoulder complaints. My husband was present during the examination and Dr. Payne was very forthcoming with his answers to my husband's questions as well. I felt Dr. Payne was more than knowledgeable and he relayed his findings/diagnosis in a professional, yet sympathetic manner...tendinitis and bursitis, soft tissue injury. He pulled up my x-rays and reviewed them with me and my husband. He also showed my a few on-line demonstrative models in which he used to explain the whole shoulder mechanics...bones, tendons & ligaments. He was very prepared and discussed his proposed treatment to me and my husband. After the three of us went over the "pros" and "cons", the "pros" seeming to have long term benefits, I received a steroid shot in my right shoulder. Dr. Payne did attempt to instill in me unreasonable hopes of immediate relief, merely advised me that I should not expect relief instantaneously, that some of his patients felt a positive difference within 24 hours, but in some patients it took longer than 24 hours. I left Dr. Payne's office with a very sore shoulder but I hoped for the best,and of course, I expected the least. The soreness continued throughout the whole night. However, the following morning...WHAM! I felt NO PAIN in my shoulder, I had full range of motion in my right arm and for the first time, I felt and heard NO cracking/popping noises in my shoulder which usually led to immediate sharp pain. I'm a 40 yr old female and with the onset of this pain in my shoulder, I felt 60 yrs old...Now I feel like I have a 30 yr old female's shoulder!!! I would definitely go back to see and be treated by Dr. Payne. Hopefully I will never HAVE to see him, but I certainly respect and trust this physician, and not only would I seek out his treatment for any medical I treatment I may potentially require, I would recommend Dr. Payne to my family and friends.

Informed and helpful staff that make your experience pleasant. Every appointment i’ve had has been no longer than an hour to an hour and a half. Highly recommend this organization and the specially Dr. Raymond Payne. i’ve had multiple replacement surgeries including a right knee total replacement, over shoulder replacement, and the elbow replacement, I’ve also had two major back surgeries. This experience with my left knee replacement working with Dr. Payne and his staff ranks at the top.

Dr. Payne....top notch doctor....if i hadnt tripped and sprung my new knee two weeks after the operation I would have just about been fully healed in approx four weeks.As it turned out,my recovery took a bit longer. now my knee is just about perfect. Dr. Payne performed knee replacement on me in January 2009. Before surgery I had very little mobility and was in constant pain. After surgery I had a new lease on life and was able to function like I never thought I would again. I tell him he is the next best thing to God. His bedside manners were excellent and I would recommend him to anyone with knee problems. I felt so comfortable with his treatment and follow-up.
